One of the unfortunate known symptoms of diabetes is its being one of the major causes of erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence among men. If you prefer the more natural medicines and the natural approach to healing diabetes – this is where the unique components of bitter melon may serve as natural ed treatment.

Bitter melon is a vegetable that is naturally rich in nutrients such as iron, calcium, beta carotene, potassium, phosphorus and also dietary fiber. Since it holds these health benefits bitter melon is used as an alternative treatment for various health ailments, diabetes included.  Most commonly in alternative medicine, the therapeutic properties of bitter melon are offered in the form of tea, or manufactured pills.

Bitter melon, also known as Momordica Charantia in Latin, grows in tropical climates such as in South East Asia, East Africa, South Africa and the Caribbean. This vegetable is famous for being rich in iron, beta carotene, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and also dietary fibers. In many countries, bitter melon is also used in herbal medicine due to its properties that help improve insulin production.

Vast clinical studies have shown that bitter melon increases the production of beta cells in the pancreas. This, in turn leads to improvement in the insulin production of the body. It is also believed to promote beneficial functions of the liver, and can act as a natural anti tumor agent. Due to its health benefits, bitter melon is used by many as an alternative treatment for diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease characterized by the presence of higher levels of blood glucose, and excess secretion of glucose in the urine. This ailment develops because of relatively low levels of insulin, leading to disturbed metabolism of carbohydrate, protein and fat. Diabetics (people who suffer from diabetes) tend to feel excessively hungry and thirsty throughout the day. In addition, diabetics are prone to get easily tired both physically and mentally. They may also suffer from constipation, excessive itchiness around the genital area and the toes, and general weakness. There are other body parts that are affected by diabetes. These include the heart, kidney, eyes, blood vessels, and the nerves. In addition to these health effects, diabetes is one of the major causes of erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence among men.

Diabetes causes impotence because it alters the function of core body systems such as the circulatory, nervous, and the endocrine system. All organs in these systems work in harmony to regulate the blood flow into the penis so normal erection can be achieved. Higher levels of blood glucose caused by diabetes tend to damage the blood vessels and the nerves. Further complications in the state of blood vessels may hamper the regular flow of blood to the penis, hampering erection.

A number of published medical studies also show, that diabetics are more likely to have low testosterone levels. Testosterone is a main hormone that is directly responsible for enhanced libido, energy, and other reproductive health functions. Unfortunately, it seems that men with type 1 diabetes are more likely to become impotent once they reach 40 years of age, and that's where this natural ed treatment might be relevant.

Many health experts today are recommending the use of alternative medicines such as bitter melons for diabetic management. Accumulating studies show that bitter melon is potent in reducing the blood sugar levels in the body. Charantin, polypeptide P, and oleanolic acid glycosides are some of the ingredients of bitter melon that are essential in diabetes treatment. Here are some of the whys and hows:

Charantin consists of mixtures of natural steroids which are shown to reduce blood sugar levels in the body. Polypeptide P, contains alkaloids that can also promote healthy blood sugar levels. On the other hand, oleanolic acid glycosides may prevent the retention of sugar from the intestines. Improvements in these area lead to improved insulin levels in the body.

Diabetes can be treated with alternative medicine and adjustments in lifestyles. Many health experts today advice diabetics to include bitter melon in their diet, to reduce their intake of anti diabetic drugs. When also suffering some levels of impotence, this natural ED treatment might be your way to catch two birds with a single stone.
